Full Version: Lithium Polymer Batteries: friend or foe?

Whilst going through a gun that I'm trading, I decided to take apart the gearbox for a quick inspection, as I had been using an 11.1v Lithium Polymer (Lipo) battery pack in it for a while. Due to the sheer ROF that these packs can bring a gun up to, I thought it prudent to check some 'wear' items before sending it on to it's new owner. Pay attention to the last 3 teeth on the piston here:

"With great power comes great responsibility."

Wise words to keep in mind when using the higher-end Lipo batteries in your guns. Now, this gearbox did have a few miles on it, but I know for a fact that this wear had occurred after switching to the Lipo pack, as I'd been in here before to re-shim and lube. Needless to say, a new piston is going in here, and the new owner will have these photos as a visual reminder that there is always a delicate balance when pushing the limits of some guns. Happy motoring!

Very interesting. What spring was it using?
Do you think wear on the piston teeth can also be caused by high/stiff spring rate?
This is usually more avoidable by doing the second and third tooth mod and adjusting for the angle of impact on the sector gear and the piston. I get the same problems using a 9.6v on my rifle.
True you can do that mod, but i find it easier not to do it because if you DO decide to sell the rifle/greabox and the new buyer does not want that mod they may not purchase yor gun.

That's a really good point. Still, if done right, I don't see why the buyer wouldn't want it.
True it does improve the performance. But i would just stick with a stock one and not a cusom one.
