What is a good substitute for gearbox grease that I can get at the local Home Depot or automotive parts store? They are not cheap by the tube on eBay when shipping is factored in.
That stuff looks like shortening, but like it'll really work!
A lot of people use silicone grease or white lithium grease, which is pretty easy to get. Some have recommended a product called SuperLube, which is a silicone grease if memory serves correct. I've even heard of people using STP oil treatment with good results.
