Since I happen to have a video store in the family, and we get to watch most of the new DVD releases the week before they're released, I thought I would start posting reviews of movies I've watched for everyone's benefit. Feel free to comment as necessary.
I'll start off by saying that compared to the original 'Hostel', this one was a let-down. Mainly because of the drawn-out nature of the beginning of the movie, but also because there really isn't much new to see here.
This movie focuses on 3 women this time, inevitably led back to our favorite part of Slovakia; the one where the infamous 'factory' sits. A good portion of the movie follows the women from Rome, then to Prague, and eventually to Slovakia. It's generally very boring fare, obviously intended to allot for 'character' building. In all honesty, you really don't care much for the characters anyway, as there is precious little told about them, just enough to allow for a certain plot twist at the end.
The 'factory' scenes are pretty much what you expect; blood, gore, and lots of it. I personally thought that more attention was lavished on the first movie in this aspect, as the scenes were far more drawn out, with more palpable tension emerging. This time around, it's more wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am. The slight plot twist at the end was really the only thing of note, but I won't detail what it is, for those of you that actually want to watch this.
The extra features of the movie are pretty much limited to few deleted scenes, and brief behind the scenes chatter. Pretty blah overall. However, it's certainly in keeping with my feeling with the overall package; blah.
Conclusion: I'd have to give this one a thumbs down
While it would make for ok rental fare, I'd hate to be the person that spent real money to watch this in the theater. Don't even contemplate buying this, unless you just HAVE to complete your 'Hostel' collection. It's honestly not worth it. Your time, and money, would be well spent somewhere else.
