I have heard that cold + Ver2 Gearboxes = Spaghetti in Your Gun

That if you play with your ver2 gearboxes in cold weather it will break at a stress point near the front, i have even seen pictures of broken gearboxes. And the only thing that you can do to prevent this is to buy a $300 CNC gearbox.

there are two things that make me skeptical about this; one, i have seen pictures of many airsofters playing in colder weather with m4s and mp5s and they seemed just fine. second, i have seen a couple instances where the gearbox had broken at the exact same point while the guy was just plinking in his room.

Does the cold really effect the gearboxes that much or do they just have a weak spot that can be compromised due to over-upgrading and/or time?
I've never heard or seen anything like this. It's probably just a load of crap to scare people into buying that CNC gearbox.
I've never heard of this either. Granted, it doesn't get too cold down there in old MO, but I've seen plenty of people playing up north with no ill effects. Even the boys on the airsoftcanada site haven't indicated that this is a problem.

Sounds like fear mongering to me boys...

yea, i know. this keeps coming up around me though. for example a couple weeks ago someone was looking for a G36 because he wanted a gun with a ver3 GB for winter. but i think this is a load of crap just to get people to buy a gearbox as expensive as thier whole gun was.
Just remember, opinions are like assholes...

hahaha, everyone has one...
What a load of crap i have version 2 GB and i used it last winter and the winter before no problems at all.
OK here it is. The cold does make the crappy pot-metal easier to fracture. The main problem is that they are not designed to take the newer springs being put in with upgrades. The gear boxes are fracturing all in the same spot. Here is a photo of one.
This was a buddy's G3 that I worked on for him. As you can see it is at the end of the piston where there is less metal and lost of force on the gearbox.
