Airsoft guns can be divided into 3 major categories.
Those categories are spring airsoft guns (springers), electric airsoft guns, and gas airsoft guns.
With regard to the price of the airsoft gun, spring airsoft guns are the cheapest, electric airsoft guns a little more expensive, and gas airsoft guns are the most expensive. However, you get what you pay for.
Gas airsoft guns deliver the most intense, realistic action of the 3 categories of airsoft guns. They also tend to made of heavy metal or resin for a life-like feel and weight. Gas airsoft guns have more moving parts, have an optional hop-up system, and can be adjusted like a real gun.
Electric airsoft guns have an advantage over gas airsoft guns in that they are cheaper, yet still have the option to provide semi-automatic and fully automatic firing capabilities. Springers do not have the ability to fire in a semi automatic or fully automatic capacity. Also, electric airsoft guns run on batteries, which are cheaper than gas canisters, and less bulky. So the airsoft player has the advantage of being leaner in play/combat.
Lastly, springers are best know for the price point advantage. They are cheap airsoft guns, and are designed to be toys for kids, or as entry airsoft guns for players that have an interest in airsoft, but aren't sure of their level of commitment. Spring airsoft guns can be full metal, but you will always have to cock the gun in order to fire, there are no semi automatic or fully automatic spring airsoft guns.
